Are bikes allowed Walkway Over the Hudson? ›

The park provides access to the Hudson River's breathtaking landscape for pedestrians, hikers, joggers and bicyclists.

The greenway along the Hudson River is one of the most popular places to ride. It offers beautiful water views and a dedicated bike path that is closed to car traffic.

The Walkway Over the Hudson spans the Hudson River and connects the City of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County with the Town of Lloyd and hamlet of Highland in Ulster County, New York. Entrances are located at 87 Haviland Road in Highland, New York and 61 Parker Avenue in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Mid-Hudson Bridge

A separate path is located on the north side of the span. It can be accessed on the Poughkeepsie side at Gerald Drive and on the Highland side at Johnson-Iorio Park. Pedestrians: Please use the path on the north side of the bridge. Cyclists: Please dismount and walk your bike across on the path.

How long does it take to walk across? Walking 1.28 miles from one side of the Walkway to the other take about 30 to 40 minutes; visitors should double that distance and time when walking from one side to another and back, depending on walking pace.

Section 72 of the Highway Act 1835 prohibits “wilfully riding” on footpaths, which refers to the path at the side of a carriageway. Since bicycles weren't as widely used in England as they are today, the original law from 1835 doesn't exactly mention cyclists or bicycles.

The Walkway provides opportunities for unique 360 degree views of the Catskills and other highlights of the Hudson River Valley. Over 3.5 million people from all over the world have visited the Walkway since it opened October 3, 2009.

Are there benches on the Walkway over the Hudson? ›

There are benches at each of the bridge's three scenic overlooks. Rest rooms are available at either end of the bridge. Bike racks are available at both bridge approaches. Food and Beverage Concessionaires are also available at both approaches.

Free parking near the Poughkeepsie entrance to the Walkway is available in Pulaski Park (170 Washington Street) and along Brookside Avenue between Washington Street and Garden Street. Follow posted signage for paid or free on-street parking.

Access is available from numerous city streets. A mix of on-street parking and paid parking garages are available, and the trail is accessible by the NYC subway and bus system. This popular trail segment provides stunning views of Manhattan and the Hudson River.

While riding a bicycle on a sidewalk is not prohibited by New York statutes, some municipalities have passed ordinances prohibiting bicycle traffic on certain sidewalks. This prohibition is usually posted. Sidewalks are for pedestrians.

It is 1.28 miles long from gate to gate and a key connector between the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail, Hudson Valley Rail Trail, and Empire State Trail. The entire span is lined with a substantial, chest-high safety railing. Access to the Walkway is free during regular operating hours.

Obey all traffic laws, such as traffic signals and stop signs. Slow your speed in response to crowds, emergency, or weather conditions. Obey all signs and arrows. Children under age 14 must wear a helmet and helmets are recommended for every cyclist.
