Sleep Well Goodnight 03:46

lyrics

buy track

If all it took was a word, you would have talked about ituntil the backs of the stars got tired hearing bout itYou only said you were sorry when it came to you easyWe could almost hear you over all your mistakesIf all it took was a good cry, you'd have drowned us in itGot you in some Noah's Ark til all the dying finishedYou always knew the way out was looking like you meant itWe could almost believe you oh when we were asleepAnd in the dark, you should know we made a promise wewould never hurt you for your liesBut in our hearts, you should know sometimes secretlywe all think maybe we should trySo I hope you sleep well GoodnightIf all it took was a prayer, you would have played us with itLed your sheep to the slaughter while you asked forgivenessYou always said you're a good man, you had “good intentions”We could almost see them on the backs of your handsIn the dark you should know we made a promise wewould never hurt you for your liesBut in our hearts, you should know sometimes secretlywe all think maybe we should trySo I hope you sleep wellGoodnightIn the dark you should know we made a promise wewould never hurt you for your liesBut in our hearts, you should know sometimes secretlywe all think maybe we should tryIt would be so easyto take the low road, the only one you know soit would be so easyleave you blindsided, everybody high fivingeverybody’d finally sleep tightGoodnight

Tennessee Whiskey (Hallelujah) 04:53

lyrics

buy track

We got a long track record of dreamingof getting lost and torn apart at all our seamsYeah we go way back, back to the river back to the women no god bothered to deliverWe come from cigarettes, yeah and old shoesfrom moving out every time the rent was dueAnd pennilessold men with guitarsand children in the back roompraying in the darkTennessee whiskey Oh, it's in the blood and bones of meHallelujah, hallelujahWe wore our sleeves long, covered our bruisesThe first to whine or cry in front of daddy losesWe sang the church songs, prayed to the holy ghostStayed up all night washing blood out of our Sunday clothesFrom cheap shacks and a bloody coughfrom orphans raised under a bloody crossOh we go way back - back to the moonshineBack to raising hell and dying young and doing timeTennessee whiskey Oh, it's in the blood and bones of meHallelujah, hallelujah

I'm Done Waiting 03:33

lyrics

buy track

For the last time, I'm not gonna do itI’m not gonna say itDon’t you put me through itFor the last time, I'm not gonna wait on youIf you hesitated, you've got only you to blameCause we’ve had centuries of silencehuman flesh and concrete floorsNo small amount of true repentancepiled up just outside your doorSo I'm done waiting
I'm done waitingI'm not waiting anymoreFor the last time, I'm not gonna do itI’m not gonna say itDon’t you put me through itFor the last time, I'm not gonna wait on youIf you hesitated, you've got only you to blameCause we’ve had centuries of silencehuman flesh and concrete floorsNo small amount of true repentancepiled up just outside your doorSo I'm done waiting
I'm done waitingI'm not waiting anymore

Over Land, Over Sea 05:08

lyrics

buy track

Stupid thing you said in the darkthat you've never known who you areYou’ve followed every single starlike it could take you homeBut every road ends up in the samebed you laid your head yesterdayThe same worried look on your facejust as lost and aloneOver land oh, oh over seait will come, it will come, wait and seeWill the sun not rise though you sleep?Keep her deserts dry though you weep?So sleepYou were lost, you said, from the startTried to crowd out some broken heartStayed up all hours in the darklike it could save your soulBut the earth’s got plenty of timeand if you take a breath she’ll be fineShe can bear your weight, love, and mineif you let it goOver land oh, oh over seait will come, it will come, wait and seeWill the sun not rise though you sleep?Keep her deserts dry though you weep?So sleepSo sleepSo sleep You’ve had your dreams as deep as the seaAll the things you thought you would beBut this is you, love, now, this is meI think we’re beautiful

Do Your Worst 03:56

lyrics

buy track

Hey baby, do your worstI've seen too much to fight itHey baby, do your worstThere's too much wrong to right itDon't say you're sorryJust do what you have to do**Hey baby, don't hold backThere's no use now pretendingHey baby, don't hold backYour silences won't change the endingDon't say you're sorryJust do what you have to do**You made this bed and you're gonna lay in it, lay in itYou got this far, now baby let's goYou can't do no more harm just by saying it, saying it --Ain't nothing gonna break my heart that I don't already know**Hey baby, do your worstI've seen too much to fight itHey baby, do your worstThere's too much wrong to right it

about

Early in 2016, while I was somewhere chest-deep in research and fluorescent lights,
Justin was combing through folders of iPhone recordings, lyrics, takes and retakes.
He pulled five from the stacks, imagining lives for them.

It’s not that we hadn’t been recording. We’d found ourselves in studios, circling tracks we later shelved. We’d listen, hearing maps that only took us where we’d been.
We didn’t want to go again.

One afternoon he sent their titles in an email:
five songs, all roots and fissures, landscapes and reckonings.
I’d found some of their lines in corners alongside poems: threat, delight, panic, fatigue, unconditional something. Do your worst.
And there were hallelujahs, drawn from the throat of an old Gibson
in a house where we no longer live.
Does it seem fitting?
And wary warnings, carved now around harp strings and shimmery guitars.
They’ve threaded themselves together.

Here are five songs we leaned into, listening as they took shape in the hands of amazing musicians. Bows, keys, breath, an unaccountable rumble. We wound up somewhere we’ve never been. We hope you’ll come with us.

This is you, love, now, this is me; I think we’re beautiful.
