For this recipe you will need apples. Baking apples work best, I like to use Gala or Yellow Delicious, but use whichever apple your prefer. To cut down on the calorie count we used Truvia Brown Sugar Substitute. You can also use Splenda Brown Sugar Baking Blend but the point count will increase.

I also normally add a quick squirt of whipped cream to the top of each baked apple before serving.

FAQs

Why do my baked apples burst? ›

Choose the Right Apples

Some varieties turn to mush so fast they explode out of their skins, while some stay weirdly firm. Either way they're edible, but not ideal—a baked apple should stay intact but be soft enough to eat with a spoon.

What are two suitable methods of cooking apples? ›

Apples can be cooked down into sauce, apple butter, or fruit preserves. They can be baked in an oven and served with custard, and made into pies or apple crumble. In the UK roast pork is commonly served with cold apple sauce made from boiled and mashed apples. A baked apple is baked in an oven until it has become soft.

How do you stop cooking apples going mushy? ›

Don't cut or slice them into very small/fine pieces. Keep them a bit bigger in size, so while baking they get little mushy and remain firm.

How long do apples need to bake in the oven? ›

In an oven preheated to 350 degrees F, the apples should be perfectly baked after 40-45 minutes (20 minutes covered with foil, 20-25 minutes uncovered).

What is the difference between cooking apples and baking apples? ›

Some apples like Granny Smith are on the cusp of being one or the other (although I prefer mine cooked). Baking apples tend to be either very firm and not as sweet (like a Granny Smith)…or a bit mushy, or don't keep well. (Like a Macintosh.) Baking apples tend to be firmer and less sweet than eating apples.

What are the best cooking and baking apples? ›

Which apples bake best? For the best pies, crisps, and other baked treats, apples need to be firm enough to hold their own during the cooking process. We call these apples “baking apples” and to namedrop, they include Braeburn, Cortland, Honey Gold, Jonathan, Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith, Haralson, and Newtown Pippin.

Can you cook apples too long? ›

"Apples lose their flavor rapidly when cooked too long," says Martinez.

Can you eat cooking apples without cooking them? ›

Cooking apples such as Bramley apples can be eaten raw, and will do you no harm. However, they are well known for their sharp taste when uncooked. Some people enjoy the taste, in which case, Bramley apples can be enjoyed uncooked as a healthy one of your five a day.

Why did my apples turn to mush in my pie? ›

Use Overripe Fruit

Even if you choose the perfect apple variety, if the fruit is overripe, your apple pie filling will turn to mush. The perfect apple pie filling is not too sweet. It has just the right amount of tartness to offset the added richness of brown sugar and cinnamon.

Why are my apples splitting open? ›

The cause of the splits is invariably irregular watering. When the tree suddenly gets a hefty drink following a period of drought, the apples quickly expand, which often leads to the skin cracking. The fruit usually produces a corky, scab-like covering, but in the case of mature apples the split can lead to rotting.

What causes apples to split open? ›

Cause: too late harvest, delay in storage, too long storage or unfavorable storage conditions. (high humidity and high temperatures during storage increase the symptoms). Prevention: Cracking can be prevented through timely harvest, removing the fruits from storage on time and ideally adapted storage conditions.

What happens if you overcook apples? ›

Obviously you don't want apples with an al dente bite, but did you know it's possible to overcook them? "Apples lose their flavor rapidly when cooked too long," says Martinez.
