Critics Consensus
Asteroid City is unlikely to win Wes Anderson many new converts, but those who respond to his signature style will find this a return to immaculately arranged form.

Audience Says
Asteroid City is classic Wes Anderson -- which may or may not be a compliment, depending on how you feel about his other films.
David Stratton The Australian The film is, for the most part, a delight. I would never miss a Wes Anderson movie, and I encourage anyone looking for something offbeat and original to go and see Asteroid City. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 14, 2023 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald As usual, I marvelled at the richly furnished nature of Anderson’s imagination, but I couldn’t help looking back on earlier, simpler times in his career. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 10, 2023 Full Review Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting For all of [ASTEROID CITY'S] artists – including Anderson, of course – the only way to deal with the chaos and uncertainty is to "just keep telling the story." Rated: 4.5/5 Jun 28, 2023 Full Review Jaylan Salah InSession Film Asteroid City is a poetic, bright-colored mess, but it’s a mess that attracts people like me, and that’s sufficient. Apr 17, 2024 Full Review Luke Goodsell ABC News (Australia) In a career that now spans nearly 30 years, Anderson's latest film – a carousel of astronomers, aliens and singing cowboys; of mid-century madness, deadpan soul and signature melancholy – might just be one of his finest. Apr 10, 2024 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine There is romance here. There is joy. There is a deep, terrified uncertainty. Rated: 7/10 Mar 18, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Luciano Asteroid City was one of the more “obscure” Wes Anderson films I have ever seen. While the actors, filmography, and scenery is all great, I think the movie is bland in story and composition. The storyline isn’t great and for me, doesn’t really match much with the story I was expecting. Personally, I give this film a 4/10. Rated 2.5/5 Stars •Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars10/27/23 Full Review C very unusual. a lot of fun Rated 5/5 Stars •Rated 5 out of 5 stars08/31/23 Full Review Drake It's always a treat to get to spend a couple hours in consuming like candy yet another Wes Anderson creation. The bold color palette, the sets and miniatures (even stop-motion), all shot in thoughtful framing, the ensemble cast of familiar faces putting on idiosyncratic performances befitting the deadpan lines, escapist tales in which all sorts of entertainment can happen—in which people fall in love with each other left and right!—but without any horrifying stakes. This is Hollywood at its best—the self-conscious drama, whether Oscar-baiting or attempting to be merely serious enough to enter the canon, is better for novels or art films, although Hollywood is affiliated with several auteurs who provide this other side of the Janus greatly enough too. This time, we're at a crossroads of Technicolor Westerns & Space Age optimism, ultra Americana, still delicious to look at and listen to and yet in its contemporary writing so much more engaging than any of those '50s movies were—although, inevitably, this screenplay gets away from itself a bit in the denouement. 'Asteroid City' is a film packed to the rafters with nothing of note. The narrative is overloaded with unnecessary stylizations that distract rather than engage. Moreover, the switching back and forth between the play and the show about it is jarring throughout, while the overarching structure is alienating.
The percentage is based on the film's reviews aggregated by the website and assessed as positive or negative, and when all aggregated reviews are positive, the film has a 100% rating.
So basically, every review on the site is classified as either "rotten" or "fresh" — good or bad, positive or negative. And then a Rotten Tomatoes score for a movie is calculated by just basically dividing the number of positive reviews by the total reviews. That's it.
The film explores themes of loneliness and the power of human connection in a complex and layered story set in a desolate desert town. The lack of clear meaning or resolution in some aspects of the film actually serves to reinforce its central theme of embracing uncertainty and moving forward in life.
It began a limited theatrical release through Focus Features in the United States on June 16, 2023, expanding to a wide release a week later. It grossed $54 million worldwide on a $25 million budget, and received generally positive reviews.
The entire film seems intentionally crafted to create a sense of emotional distance, for a few reasons—not least of which is that the film's opening explains that Asteroid City isn't a real place, and the story that takes place in Anderson's pastel diorama is actually a play being staged for a studio audience on a ...
