Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

1. Legs

Answer: 11'Legs eleven' is one of the traditional number calls used in the British version of bingo, a chance game that involves a card with numbers on it; every time the caller calls a number, the player crosses the number off their card if they have it, and if they cross all numbers off, they must shout 'House' or 'Bingo'. (We used to play it in French and German classes at school as a way of learning numbers.) The number 11 vaguely resembles a pair of legs, hence the nickname.

Other calls include 'two fat ladies' for 88, 'two little ducks' for 22 and 'unlucky for some' for 13. Several bingo halls in the UK have closed down due to a combination of smoking bans and bingo games moving online.

2. Footballers on pitch

Answer: 11The traditional football team (or 'soccer' team to American players) has eleven players: ten outfield players, a mixture of attackers, defenders and midfielders, and a goalkeeper at the back as the last line of defence. The goalkeeper is the only player allowed to touch the ball with their hands, albeit within the penalty box; handling the ball outside their area gets them sent off.

Some fans might argue that a biased referee counts as a twelfth player; at Anfield, the home stadium of Liverpool FC, the supporters are nicknamed 'the twelfth man' due to their vocal supporter of the home side.

3. Millie Bobby Brown

Answer: 11Millie Bobby Brown is an English actress. She played the role of Jane Ives AKA Eleven, a girl with telekinetic and psychic powers, in the Netflix series 'Stranger Things'. Her first film role was in 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' in 2019, and she also played the title character in the 'Enola Holmes' films. She was made a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2018.

4. Heinz

Answer: 57The number 57 is associated with the food company Heinz because of its '57 Varieties' advertising slogan, although the number of 'varieties' is apocryphal. It stems from a 1902 advert for pickles, claiming that there were 57 varieties of pickle; H. J.

Heinz came up with the number at random while counting pickle varieties because he found the number seven attractive, as opposed to 58 or 59. Heinz had originally been inspired by an advert for '21 styles of shoes' in New York City in 1896. 57 became an iconic number for the company; the switchboard telephone number at the Heinz 57 Centre was 57, and the company paid the Pittsburgh Steelers $57 million for naming rights to their stadium.

The number 57 still appears on Heinz products today, such as its famous tomato ketchup.

5. Lanthanum

Answer: 57Lanthanum is the 57th element in the Periodic Table and gets its name from 'lanthanein', an Ancient Greek word meaning 'to lie hidden'. Despite its name and reputation of being rare, it is fairly abundant in the Earth's crust. It gives its name to the lanthanides, a group of elements with similar properties which also includes samarium, ytterbium and gadolinium. Appearance-wise, it is a soft, ductile silvery-white metal, and was originally used in mantles for gas lanterns. Nowadays, it is used in batteries, carbon arc lamps and hot cathode electrodes in various compound forms.

6. Moselle

Answer: 57France is divided into numbered administrative divisions known as departments, and Moselle is the 57th department. It was founded in 1790, following the French Revolution, and is located in the Grand Est region in the northeast of France, in the area formerly known as Lorraine.

Its capital is Metz and it is named for the Moselle River, which rises in the Vosges and joins the Rhine at Koblenz in Germany. Moselle is known for its wines, produced in the border region spanning France, Germany and Luxembourg; Moselle wines are predominantly white, with the Auxerrois Blanc and Müller-Thurgau being the most common grape varieties.

7. Everton FC

Answer: 78Everton Football Club are a Liverpool-based football team and the 'older sibling' of their more famous red rivals Liverpool FC. The club was originally formed in 1878 and on social networks such as Twitter/X, it is not uncommon to see Everton fans with 78 in their usernames because of this. Everton were originally known as St Domingo's FC after a local chapel and the team consisted of congregation members, but changed their name to Everton in 1879 so non-parishioners could join.

They were originally based at Anfield, but relocated to Goodison Park in 1892 after a dispute with landowner John Houlding. Houlding founded a new team, Everton FC and Athletic Grounds Ltd., in response; this team later became Liverpool.

8. Vinyl RPM

Answer: 78RPM stands for 'revolutions per minute', and 78 RPM is one of the rotational speeds of gramophone records, mainly vintage ones; it was set as the standard record speed by the Gramophone Company in 1912. 78 RPM records, or 78s, have wider grooves than 33 or 45 RPM records, requiring a wider stylus, can only be played in mono (through one channel) and also hold less music (approximately five minutes).

They were traditionally made from shellac, a type of resin, that would later be replaced by vinyl.

9. Cards in tarot deck

Answer: 78The typical tarot deck contains 78 cards. The 56 Minor Arcana cards are divided into suits of Cups, Pentacles or Coins, Wands and Swords, each representing a different element (Water, Earth, Fire and Air respectively); as well as pip cards numbered from 1 (Ace) to 10, the suits also contain the face cards of the Page (AKA the Jack or Knave), Knight, Queen and King. The 22 Major Arcana cards are trump cards not associated with any suit an are numbered from I (the Magician) to XXI (the World). The Fool is an unnumbered card, but is sometimes assigned the number of 0 or XXII.

Tarot cards originated in Italian around the 15th century. They were originally used for games, but 18th century French occultists such as Jean-Baptiste 'Etteilla' Alliette also used them for fortune-telling, a practice which continues today.

10. Henry's wives

Answer: 6If you've seen the musical 'Six' or studied Tudor history, you'll know this one! Henry VIII is most often remembered as the English king who had six wives, and created the Church of England so he could legally divorce the first one. The wives in question are Catherine of Aragon, the mother of Queen Mary I; Anne Boleyn, the mother of Queen Elizabeth I; Jane Seymour, the mother of King Edward VI; Anne of Cleves; Catherine Howard; and Catherine Parr.

The mnemonic 'divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived' is used to remember the fates of the six women; both Boleyn and Howard were executed on charges of adultery and, in Boleyn's case, incest and treason as well.

Henry was actually Parr's third husband and she went on to marry Thomas Seymour after his death.

11. Patrick McGoohan

Answer: 6Patrick McGoohan was an Irish-American actor who produced and starred in 'The Prisoner', playing Number Six, a former British agent who is captured and wakes up in the mysterious Village.
